Everything You Need to Know About Sorority Recruitment

by: Olivia Kerper

I never knew I wanted to go Greek until I stepped foot on my college campus–and even then, it was kind of a joke to me to sign up for recruitment at all.

I had no idea what I was getting myself into and I didn’t know the first thing about Greek life.

I knew my mom loved her chapter in college and still meets up with them decades later, but what was all the hype about? And was it something I wanted to get myself into?

Here are some tips from a clueless Potential New Member turned sorority girl and Assistant Vice President of Membership and Recruitment!

1. Do your research.

Which sororities are on your campus? Do you know any sisters from any chapters, and how do their values align with yours? You’ll hear about each sorority’s values a hundred times during recruitment, but it doesn’t hurt to do your own research beforehand!

2. Attend pre-recruitment events.

This is a great time to meet sisters so it feels like you have familiar faces walking into parties.

Most of the time, recruitment pairings are done based on which sisters have had conversations with you pre-recruitment, and you will be much more comfortable knowing people when going to parties during rush.

Make sure to put yourself out there! Follow people on Instagram, initiate conversations on campus–be open!

3. Be your honest self.

So many girls get wrapped up in what they’re going to wear and how to make themselves look the most beautiful on the outside for recruitment, but what truly matters is the honest conversations you have with these girls.

While it might seem fun to get dressed up for a week, try not to get too caught up in the hype where you forget to be yourself.

Remember, the main goal of recruitment is to find a group of girls that you can do life with, so make it genuine!

4. Be prepared to talk.

Sorority parties are literally all conversation. The point is to talk and learn about what each sorority has to offer.

These girls have been prepping for months to make sure that they can contribute positive things to the conversation and learn a lot about you in a little amount of time, and I promise you, they are more nervous than you are!

But if you still feel nervous, go ahead and prepare questions or conversation starters to keep it interesting!

5. Ask questions!

The few days that you are going through sorority recruitment are super important.

You only have a week or less to learn everything you need to know about this group of girls, so be sure to ask about their values, philanthropy, what they do for fun.

Even consider asking them why they chose the sorority they did! That was the most beneficial question I asked, and I love being asked that question during recruitment now!

6. Keep an open mind.

It is so common for people to go into sorority recruitment having their heart set on one chapter, when in reality, it isn’t the best fit for them.

When it truly comes down to it, focus on which sorority’s event left you feeling the most comfortable, genuine, and truly yourself.

7. In the end, what is meant to be will be.

When it really comes down to it, it doesn’t matter what you wore. It’s about genuine conversations and connections that were had that will lead you exactly where you need to be.

If you are on the fence about signing up for recruitment, just know, I was too.

I was extremely nervous and wondered why I would essentially volunteer to be a part of a group that pays for friends. Being in a sorority is so much more than that.

These are women that encourage you and stand by your side through some of the most formative years of your life.

They will be your shoulder to cry on, people to celebrate with, and mentors through life. And they are so excited to meet you!

I know it sounds cliché, but literally everything happens for a reason. It will all work out!

And even if you go through recruitment and decide not to join, you will still meet so many wonderful girls that you will see on your college campus for the next four years! Put yourself out there and go for it!

Good luck and God bless!☼☼☼
